Questions to ask before hiring a logo designer
Hiring wrong wastes time and money. Here's how to filter candidates before you commit.
Every designer claims they are strategic. Every studio says they deliver. These questions separate a process from a volume shop.
Can I see relevant work, not just a pretty gallery?
Don't ask for "a portfolio." Ask for case studies that match your industry, audience, and price point. A designer who branded a sports team will understand different constraints than one who only did restaurant logos.
What does your process actually look like?
Listen for: research, multiple directions, feedback loops, revisions. If the answer is "I'll send you 5 options," that's a freelancer working on volume, not a strategic designer.
What do you need from me?
Great designers ask about your business first. If they jump straight to "what style do you like," they're a style-passer, not a thinker.
How do you handle when we disagree?
There will be a revision round you hate. Their answer matters: "I push back professionally" is different from "I do what you say."
What do I actually receive?
File types (AI, EPS, SVG, PDF, PNG), color modes (RGB, CMYK, Pantone), usage right, and revision numbers spelled out in the contract protect both sides.
